Exploring Maldives – Budget Travel In Maafushi

Traveling the Maldives on a budget in Maafushi island. The Maldives has been placed on a pedestal yet not a lot of people visit this country because they believe it to be expensive, but that is a misconception. It is possible to travel and enjoy the Maldives even when you’re on a budget.

We stayed on a local island, Maafushi which is located in the south of Maldives. It has been opened up for tourism and everything is a lot cheaper compared to the private islands.

Never thought we could visit the Maldives, but we did and we stayed for a total of 23 days. It was awesome and a dream come true. Let us take you with us as we discover this local island in the Maldives.

Crashing a new years eve party in jaipur

Celebrated the new year in India and it was totally fun!

Initially tried to organized a private party for the new year’s eve celebration on Couchsurfing but if fell through, we ended up CRASHING a house party in Jaipur. Yogyakarta-Gateway to Borobudur and Prambanan Temple; things you need to Know

In our recent trip to Java, we had a litte stop in the city called Yogyakarta. It is (often called “Jogja”) the capital city of Indonesia‘ Special Region of Yogyakarta. As the only Indonesian royal city still ruled by a monarchy,  it is located in the island of Java known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. Its ornate 18th-century royal complex, or kraton, encompasses the still-inhabited Sultan’s Palace. Also within the kraton are numerous open-air pavilions that host classical Javanese dance shows and concerts of gamelan music, characterized by gongs, chimes and plucked string instruments. it is located in the Central Java and could be reached via several modes of tranportation.

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Train – there are a lot of routes available depending on where you are traveling from. There are two main train station that connects Jogja to different part of Java. As we were previously in Jakarta prior to going to Yogyakarta, it took us 8 hours on a train. We had the executive type of train so it was comfortable.
  • Plane – Yogyakarta has two international airport that you can fly in directly. Various places around Indonesia has flights available to Jogja as well.
  • Private Vehicle – This is possibe if you are traveling from another part of Java, the roads around Java are decent and you can definitely drive on your own with the help of online Map apps >> Google Map – Yogyakarta. Make sure to download offline maps.

We started our trip in Jakarta, had a ticket living from Gambir Train Station at 8am. The 8-hour train ride went on smoothly, had several scheduled stop to several stations. That’s pretty much it. The train has mini restaurant where you can buy food, and there are attendants that visits ever so often bringing food for sale. Upon arriving in the Jogja station, we waited for our bike rental which we reserved in advance and drove 20 minutes to our homestay. (tip: better to book for transport in advance to avoid drivers crowding you for service)

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Train ticket – You can book your train ticket in advance direactly the train company directly Kereta Api Indonesia , It is convenient and you can skip the long queue at the train station. You can just go directly to the check-in kiosk. You can also check out TRIP.COM they offer online booking on various services, Hotel ticket, train, flight. (Alternative)
  • Bike rental – Normally you can get this service through your accommodation. we got ours at IDR 70,000 ($5).
  • Accommodation – Tiga Lima Homestay , they were very accommodating. Breakfast was included in the package and they’d let you choose the time you want to have them from 6-9am, and they’ll deliver it at your door. The place was nice as well and had a pool and rooms are spacious.
  • Restaurant – Yam Yam Thai Restaurant, the food was great, they had different varieties of curries and all are equally delicious. You would want to reserve in advance as it could get really crowded.
  • Restaurant – Canting Restaurant – Yogya , It is located inside a mall so it is quite easy to locate. It is on the top floor with an overlooking view of Jogja.
  • Desserts – Tempo Gelato , there were quite a few gelato places in jogja, and at night they are all packed. This ice cream bar is spacious, with a garden sitting, and the interiors is nicely decorated.
  • Recreation – Bliss Pool & Lounge , they are open until 4am, they got plenty of pool tables, the place is clean, and the crew are very friendly.
  • It is always better to drive on your own, as long as you are set to drive on a very busy roads. The city is big enough for a spontaneous city tour with a lot of interesting things to offer.

Borobudur Temple – it is one of Indonesia’s top tourist attraction. Declaired as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as largest Buddhist temple in the world recognized by Guinness World Records . This temple has gone through multiple restorations and hardships; from volcanic eruptions of nearby volcanoes, stolen head of buddha, bombing, and overcrownding causing wear on the stone stairs. It remains popular for pilgrimage, with Buddhists in Indonesia celebrating Vesak Day; “Buddha’s Birthday. The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Buddhahood), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha in the Theravada or southern tradition. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • An hour bike ride from Yogyokarta proper
  • Best to travel before the break of dawn to skip traffic
  • Best to visit during sunrise, but be prepared for influx of tourist doing the same thing as you. The earlier you are, the best spot you can get for sunrise
  • Compared to alot of temples in Indonesia, the entrance fee to the temple is more expensive, IDR 450,000 ($33) but it included breakfast buffet.

Prambanan Temple –  is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimūrti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Transformer (Shiva). The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) northeast of the city of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu architecture, and by the towering 47-metre-high (154 ft) central building inside a large complex of individual temples. Prambanan attracts many visitors from around the world. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • Best view on sunset, but very touristy
  • Just a 35 minutes bike ride from Yogyokarta proper, be longer if in a car because of traffic
  • Drivers are all over the roads, and it would be very stressful to drive around if you are not an experience driver.
  • Once you leave the city proper roads are getting better and there’s an allocated lane for bikes
  • If you want to have a photo with less people in it, visit early in the morning as people tend to go to Borobudur Temple for sunrise.
  • This destination is very expensive compared to other temples, entrance fee IDR 370,000 ($25)

APPROXIMATE TRAVEL BUDGET:

  • IDR 500k per night in Tiga Lima Homestay breakfast included
  • IDR 70K per day bike rental
  • IDR 450K per pax entrance fee to Borobudur Temple buffet breakfast included
  • IDR 350K per pax entrace fee to Prambanan Temple (there are other temples situated in the premesis of the compund)
  • IDR 50K for petrol
  • Meal prices is not included as it varies depending on where you go eat

I somehow have a mixed opinion regarding both temples, as both are world acclaimed site, it was way too expensive to visit both. They have fully commercialized both temple that even when you are not dress appopriately to go inside a temple, they tend to overlook them. The people guarding the premesis often overlook tourist that are disrespecting the the temple, like standing, and sitting on the parts of the temple. At the end of the trip, I fully appreciate the ancient people who have built these massive temple it must have taken them years to contruct th huge temples. I am in awe of the intricate designs carved on the walls, it tells stories of what happened hundreds of years ago. Yogyakarta, what an amazing place you are.

Nusa Penida, Indonesia – A Travel Guide To A perfect Gateaway

Nusa Penida, Indonesia is an island in the southeastern side of Bali separated by Badung Strait . It is a part of district of Klungkung Regency that includes the neighbouring small island of Nusa Lembongan .

Years ago Nusa Penida was on my bucket list of “Places to go to”. Now I’ve ticked it off, and it was an awesome feeling. It wasn’t the easiest to go to though, the drive was terrible. It was long, agonizing hours on a bike driving through very narrow roads. Twists and turns, ups and downs. The journey was so difficult that I almost decided not to continue. But I’ve longed to see it, I have got to see it!

So I continued driving on these awful roads, massive holes, some didn’t even look like roads anymore.  It was more like driving through a dried-out river with stones, sand, and mini cliffs. But boy, I’m glad I continued.

Oh the view was great from up here. And the sunset, it was just perfect.

Gazing upon it from above was surreal. It was unbelieveable, like I was living in a dream. It was exactly what I expected it to be. Breathtakingly beautiful and undeniably amazing.

It was almost sunset and that made it more appealing, it added drama to the moment and perfection to the view. Soon enough it’s beauty was covered with darkness and I went home with a grateful heart.

How to get there:

  • From Canggu  – take a forty minutes cab to Sanur port
  • From Padang Bai – East of Bali, take a ferry to Nusa Penida
  • Sanur port – forty five minutes ferry ride to Nusa Penida
  • Nusa Penida – rent a motor bike at the port (alternative – Arrange car pick up from your hotel)

I lost count of how many stairs there were, I am pretty sure though it is over 500. That was the time I sat, tongue out. I am out of shape.

How to get around Nusa Penida and things you should know:

  • Motor bike – is always the go-to vihecle for exploring, it gets you from one place to another easily and quickly. Just always drive safe and use helmets. There were multiple blind curves, the roads are narrow and sometimes there are huge holes in the middle of it. I recommend avoid driving at night.
  • Car Service (Alternative) – Arrange car through your hotel, they normally offer per day charges depending on the destination you are going. It’s less hassle but could sometimes hard to go around as the roads are very narrow.
  • Always download offline Google maps. The signal is really weak around the island, it’s always safe to access your map without internet connection. Click here to download: Nusa Penida map
  • When snorkeling at the Manta point it is to best leave early, it tends to get really crowded on a later time, hence lesser chances of you seeing the manta rays.
  • On your way to Nusa Penida, I suggest you be at the port early, tide tends to go up , there could be big waves and also the port don’t have any ramp during onboarding. It is a water entry; flip flops are recommended.
  • Always wear sun protection, I use Garnier SPF50 sunblock lotion and also wear rash gaurd if you have sensitive skin, protection for jellyfish sting.

Luckily I was one of the lucky few.

Transportation, Accomodation and Recommendations:

  • Gede Driver (+62 813 5366 6692) – Car Drop-off from Canggu to Sanur port
  • Check out these website when booking ferry ticket Sanur-Nusa Penida & vice versa; Marlin Fast Boat, Crown Fast Cruises, Sugriwa Express , 12Go , the latter one has the Cheapest fare compared to booking it directly to the ferry company.
  • I stayed in Prasi Sunset Bungalows – Tripadvisor , Prasi Sunset Bungalows – Booking.com , Check the link to see reviews and pictures of the place. Definitely worth it. The place was quite nice, friendly, accommodating and warm crew, the stay was pleasant. They made sure that your is experience great. They arranged car pick up upon arrival and departure, motor rental at the hotel, the boat rental for snorkeling with Manta ray among other water activities. And made the ferry reservation from Nusa Penida to Lombok via Padang Bai and the GIli Island . The view from the villa was lovely, overlooking the sea and great vantage point to see Mt. Agung .  It has pool, hot water, Wi-Fi, and breakfast included. If you want more details about the place send a message to Wyn Adnyana , he’s the one who’s taking charge of the hotel.
  • Virgin Beach Restaurant – was the one restaurant that got stuck in my head. I liked there tuna steak not only because I haven’t eaten seafood for the longest time, but because it tasted amazing and the seasoning was perfect. It was a pleasant meal.

Expenses Breakdown:

  • 200k IDR – Car Canggu to Sanur port
  • 270k IDR – Ferry ticket booked online (cheaper compared to booking direct)
  • 100k IDR – Car pick up by Hotel
  • 640K IDR – Hotel accommodation for two nights
  • 80K IDR – Motor bike rental at the hotel
  • 900K IDR – Private Boat rental for Snorkeling arranged by hotel 350K IDR – boat fee per person if joining a group (Alternative)
  • 25K IDR – Entrance Peguyangan Falls
  • 10K IDR – Entrance Diamond Beach
  • 5K IDR – Entrance kilingkling Beach (Trex)
  • 60K IDR – Petrol Refill
  • 100k IDR – Car drop-off to pier arranged by hotel
  • 400K IDR – Ferry from Nusa Penida to Lombok

Indulge myself into new flavors Balinese food. It’s going to be a roller coaster life from hereinafter. I am so anxious. It will be a completely different life but I am ready for this.

Roughly two months ago I left my job in preparation for the trip. It was hard, but it was necessary. It enabled me to travel the few remaining islands of the Philippines that I haven’t explored. The last couple of months were hectic. Not only because of the weeks after weeks of traveling from one island to another but also because of the preparation of documents for the actual trip.

But the jitters didn’t stop there, because the actual day of the trip I had to undergo the last hurdle (the hardest one) the Philippines Immigration . As this was my very first trip abroad I was pretty anxious about the immigration. I’ve heard and read stories about people getting offloaded from there flights, people being put on hold for hours. Knowing these things caused panic to my system, so bad that I couldn’t sleep for the last remaining nights I had in the Philippines .

International Drivers License valid for 1 year. Been driving since day 01 here in Bali

From getting sponsorship letter and telex (few of documents needed for the Indonesian Embassy). No- Filipinos don’t need a Visa to go to Indonesia if you’re only staying less than 60 days. But because I intend to stay there a maximum of six months, I had to undergo the process of getting the visa. And it came through. I also had to process for an International Driving Permit, and have travel insurance.

Maximum stay of 60 days and can be extended to a total of 6 months

But as you all know, I did it! I’ve passed the immigration and is now in the very humid country of Indonesia . I am still adapting, but I am getting there! I am going to miss my family in Argao, my friends, and my life in the Philippines . But I am here now and I am one step closer to my dream.

Sinulog 2019: You’re An Epic One

Wrapping up my 2019 Sinulog experience and yes, it was by far the most epic Sinulog ever. Mostly it got to do with all the partying but there’s more to it than that.

                                                  Trying to fit as many faces as possible

January 19, 2019, Saturday (7:30am): Couchsurfing Cebu Boat Party – Escaped the city as phone signals were cut off for security purposes. It was the day of the solemn procession. So there I was in a bus full of couch surfers roughly 45 individuals all excited for the day ahead. Travelling toCordova port to get into a boat that will then anchor in the waters of Cebu. Oops! A little hiccup our boats were unfortunately held up because of the fluvial parade. But it was fine, we were too excited to even care and we had the entire day ahead of us. Finally boats arrived and soon enough we were settled in our corresponding boats. Munchies and booze ready, so as our liver.

Approximately 45 minutes after, we were anchored near a sanctuary. Few people braved the cold water, some opted to stay dry and started drinking. Time runs so fast when you’re having fun #TrueStory, next thing we know we were travelling back to the port. Well, that’s after face painting, tons of picture taking, bottles emptied, foods ran out, and people trembling from being cold. It was safe to say people had some fun, too much fun as some lost their shoes and was confuse why it was still sunny (it was still 4PM). One hour after I was back in my bed ready to take a nap, as we planned on going to Mad Monkey Hostel for the after party. But what suppose to be a quick nap turned into a full bloom sleep, woke up at 11pm very hungry. I didn’t realize I was that exhausted.

January 20, 2019, Sunday (9:00am)
Sinulog proper – there I was in the streets of Ayala trying to reach to our meeting place with other couchsurfers. Main streets were already close and had to walk towards the agreed location. As expected, thousands of people were already in the streets, plenty of vendors; selling head dresses, whistles, face painting, hair painting, balloons, and food. The struggle in finding the people we suppose to be with was real, but we found them eventually after less than an hour. But it didn’t end there, the real ordeal was crossing the main road, where the performers are dancing. Not to mention the people that’s too insensitive to even move when asked politely. But things went perfectly well, as I noticed that the army guarding the rope stopping the people from getting inside the main street was my friend (it pays to be friendly). So there I was crossing the main street and head to where our other friends at.

Hey Fellas Hostel
After meeting with our friend we headed to Hey Fellas Hostel , I was under the impression that familiar faces will be at the hostel. Apparently, it was a private party for the guest staying at the hostel, but hey it’s Sinulog everybody is invited. So as early as 10am, I was able to crashed a party, made new friends, asked to stay for lunch, started drinking while waiting for food to be served, and captured lots of photos. Another hiccup, it rained. But the rain can’t stop our party-lover selves from partying. Soon enough we headed to where the street party was. I was all dressed up for the occasion, tattered Sinulog shirt, head dress, face paint, tipsy but not drunk self. We passed through thousands of people and then we decided to get off the main road in search for drinks.

As expected it was quite difficult to look for a store that sells liquor as it was banned and theres no party unless theres liquor. So we walked further until we reached Hey Joe, as it was already far enough from the main street they were allowed to sell liquor and viola!!! party begun! People from the Happy Boat 5 (another party boat from day before) were also there drinking making it more fun! Then we proceeded to walking along the streets at this point armed with paints, a water bottle refilled with liquor. The party continues.

To summarized, There were a lot of free hugs given, we were shouting “free-the-tits” most of the time, wiped paint to random people’s faces, took a pictures of Cebu’s haunted house, crashed a garage karaoke session, crashed multiple street parties, got sprayed on with water, sipped someone else’s drinks, stole somebody else’s bottle of liquor, and millions of pictures taken. Needless to say, we had a blast.  Then we got hungry and headed back to Hey Fellas Hostel , had a quick bite and drank some more.

Sinulog’s not over yet as we continued taking millions of pictures, people started falling (very drunk), literally everybody was busy bonding and were having fun. Then we finally bid our goodbyes and had to transfer to a different group. This time we were headed to Hostel Seven Cebu (where our other friends were hanging out). We didn’t stay for long though as the place ran out of beers (no point of staying). Stayed up until the the fireworks were done. Soon enough I was heading home on a motorbike, waving the rainbow flag I got from earlier’s parade.

To sum up everything, needless to say I had an epic day together with random people. That’s always the beauty of being friendly and open minded. You always end up with new experience with people you just meet. And more often than not, it is always memorable.

SINULOG 2019, you were a blast and I hope you won’t be my last.

As a traveller that I am and a very practical at that, I have been living in these principle. I am not rich and perhaps will never be but at least I am able to travel when I want to, to where I want to. Because I know my priorities, I focus on it, and work real hard for it. Love & Hate Relationship With The Rain

Here I am in my indoor hammock, stuck at home because it’s raining. It couldn’t be more perfectly timed just when I’m feeling blue. So there I was watching droplets of rain as they create ripples on the ground. Not realizing I have been staring blankly at the pouring rain. How could this rain be so beautiful yet so painful inside.

My mind was somewhere else. It was traveling back in time. To that moment when two souls crashed a shed to let the rain pass by. Two happy souls full of unspoken feelings, hopeful for better future. There, we were all smiles sharing stories of our silly childhood years trying to know each other in a deeper perspective. Laughing at how different our culture are.

The rain did stop, but not long enough it started pissing down proper hard and had to crash another shed. Read poems that relates to what we exactly feel; loud laughters and warm smiles, beautiful penetrating stares, I miss those. We were just waiting for the rain to stop, we didn’t realize we were making a bitter- sweet memory then.

Rain never fully stopped, it turned into tiny droplets and we had to drive back. Warm hug from my back, grasping hands on my stomach, life never been this better. The warmth, it felt like home. We were cruising under the droplets of rain, running over 70kph, I never felt so happy. It was a bliss. Then the silly argument involving mispronunciation and childish behaviour. It ruined everything.

Minutes of not talking, minutes turned hours and the rain never stopped. And so was my sadness. Morning came and there you were, with me but just not the same. We were just lying in bed, heart beats in unison, staring blankly at the ceiling, not breaking the mood, as we listened to Take Me on repeat, it was a heavy feeling. Both thinking of the impending separation. Both realizing sepanx was real. Now spoken feelings trapped inside the four corners of the room, trying to break havoc. outside wasn’t any better typhoon was inevitable.

The last night together…

We were being spontaneous trying to spend as much time together as we could, shared cigarette sticks, stolen kisses, secret glances, hammock shenanigans, messy sheets, hint of tequila on your tongue, fingers intertwined, naughty grins, heartfelt giggles, cold hands on my nape, lingering touches, warm breathes, fingers playing with your hair, peck on the nose, fingers tracing your face, natural scent, deep kisses, warm hugs, palpitations, soft whispers – I love you’s. It was heaven on earth!

I blinked once and suddenly pulled back to reality. I swear it felt so real, it all seemed like yesterday only that it was ages ago. I completely zoned out, and for a couple of minutes I am immobile. To then realise that my face is drench with tears. Its still raining, I’m still feeling blue, you’re still not here. I sobbed.

Rain has never been my best friend, for a lost soul like me I dreaded rain only because it ruins plans, and it makes me stay in one place which gives me massive time to think. But rain as previously implied, is both beautiful and depressing. And as much as I want to hate it, I just can’t cause it reminds me of those lovely moments with you. No matter how bitter-sweet those memories were, no matter how much tears I cried every time I look back to it. Those were my precious moments with you, our moments together, we were happy, ecstatic even. We were in love, but just not meant to be.

We love each other that’s for sure, Just may be not the right amount of love. Just may be not the kind of love that is strong enough to move mountains. But I miss you, been missing you, will be missing you, and yano I love you.

Friends, They Make Life Easier

In this lifetime you’ll meet a lot of people; some of those are passing by, but if your lucky enough you’ll meet those crazy few that will stay and and you’ll call friends. They’re those friends that you don’t get in touch often but you know will be there if you need them. They’re the few who will tag you on adventures may it be a quick climb or a spontaneous road trips of which you will willingly commit. They’re the few whom you share the same passion and interests, and of course share almost everything and apparently the same vanity.😂

And yes, I got lucky and I met those crazy few and needless to say all our get together are equally memorable. So cheers to friendship, cheers to summer, to beautiful sunsets, to hammock moments, to draining our phones and going home with thousands of photos with almost the same pose, hence VAIN.🤭😂

With a joyful heart and rudely tanned skin, I could definitely say “what a lovely rest day that was”. Looking forward to more road trips and photoshoot with these guys. My bro’s from another mo’s.

Good friends don’t let you do crazy stuff alone, they do it with you and enjoy every second of it. End of the day they give you good times and leave best memories. It’s really rare to meet real people these days, I’m pretty lucky to have found these two

Mount Kapayas: You Took My Breath Away

Ill be honest, I dont really go trekking or climb mountains a lot but when I do, I always see to it to make the best out of it. I may not be a professional climber but I do know the basics and I always practice safety.

In this particular adventure thou, I was lucky enough to be trekking with one of the best trekkers there is in Cebu, and ill forever be grateful. For the chance and guidance they provided all through out the experience.

I must say, I was pretty much psyched to be climbing one of the highest mountain peak in Cebu and quite scared at the same time. But it all turned out fine, we may had experienced some bumps but nothing much that we cant handle and the event was a big success. Sure we do have some points to consider improving but overall it was an experience of a lifetime.

Saturday

4pm: Van Transfer to Compostela from Ayala terminal

5pm: Arrival at the beach. Set up tents, hommock and

Cook food for dinner

6pm: Dinner

7- 9pm: LNT Workshop

9-11pm: Last and Light Backpacking

11.15pm: Awarding of Certificates

11.30pm: Lights Off

SUNDAY:

4.30am: Wake up call prepare breakfast per group.

6.00am: Enroute to Catmon

6.45am: Meet the Driver with our Permit.

Registration at Police Office. Last buy at 7-11 7.00am: Motorcycle ride to Jump off

8.00am: Jump Off, meet the guide and prayer and

Start the trek.

11.00am: Peak, pictures

12.30pm: Lunch, rest

1.30pm: Decend

2.30pm: Enroute to Falls

5.30pm: Enroute back to Cebu

The trail started easy, it was just like walking in the park but it gotten really hard with our backpacks and the heat of the sun. That’s where the lightbacking comes in places, never really bring stuff that aren’t necessary it’ll serve as a deadweight. (Not a big idea to bring lots of stuff).

The summit thou, it took my breath away! Quite literally but its really nice to have such exeperience. Some peaks are easy to reach, this one is not one of them. You have to climb your way up through the stone wall (cliff if not with trees that surrounds it). It was really challenging and nerve wrecking. But once I get to the top, it was really worth it. The view was so amazing, 360 degree view of the north, I was in awed for a couple of minutes. Not everybody gets to see this amazing creation, right at that moment I felt really blessed and humbled, and realized how such small space I occupy in this big big world. But that specific moment, I was on top of it, and I couldn’t be anymore prouder.
