LAND BORDER CROSSING EXPERIENCE – COSTA RICA TO NICARAGUA

My first land border crossing from Costa Rica to Nicaragua wasn’t fun at all, if anything it was a sh*tshow!

We started our travel from Santa Ana, Costa Rica, woke up 4am to get a 4:30am Uber to TICA BUS. Got there too early so they put us to the 5am bus instead of the 6am booking that we had. That was a blessing!

7hours into the trip we finally reached the Costa Rica border – no problem there, went by smoothly. (Not to mention the long queue and with only one immigration they have).

Few meters away, we reached the Nicaraguan border. This was where the shi*tshow started.

First they checked our PCR test result, no problem with that. Then the dreaded immigration. Of course being a PH passport holder I always have issues entering other countries.

For Nicaragua I need a visa on arrival, paid 50 USD to process for it. Took an hour for them to finish. At this point I’m already very anxious, what if they won’t give me the visa and the fact that all the other people from our bus already passed the border wasn’t helping. Few more minutes and finally they stamped my passport. Phew! Relieved!

Now I’m up for another obstacle- Customs. Prior to traveling, we researched about Nicaragua and found out that drones are illegal in the country and that’s a problem because we have one. Base on our research they would confiscate drones and more other than not, owners were not able to get it back even after paying storage fee when they travel out of Nicaragua.

Click this >>> NICARAGUA DRONE LAW

So day before our trip, what I did was disassembled the drone detached the propellers and scattered the accessories all over my luggage hoping for them to not spot it and I can get through custom smoothly. It turned out to be a very bad idea. I had to open all my luggage take out all the accessories and they took the drone either way.

Ay this point I’m sweating rocks, worried about our bus to Managua, all the passengers must be so pissed at me for delaying them (2 hours had passed since we got to the border), and the drone being confiscated.

What happened next was totally unexpected, Customs people gave us a paper, said we had to go to the annex building and had to get the paper signed. One local started helping us, went to the annex building with Linsey, had the paper signed and lo and behold they handed the drone back to us.

The local person even helped carry our luggages as we ran to the Tica Bus, we thanked him immensely and handed him some money. There’s always a  great samaritan wherever we go and we’re always grateful to those people in moments like these.

We’re back on the bus, and it’s apparently the 6am bus that was waiting for us. So at this point I’m totally relived. They didn’t have to wait for us that long at least.

At the end of the day I am grateful for going to the bus station as early as we did, that enabled us to get the 5am bus. It gave us 1 extra hour to cover for the 2 hours delay on my visa processing. Grateful for the immigration officer  for being so patient and for trying so hard to understand us despite language barrier. Grateful for the good Samaritan that helped us with our drone snafu. And for the TICABUS for being such a great company. And for Linsey who’s been really patient and collected during the entire delay.

My first land border crossing was a complete sh*tshow and definitely a memorable one. It’s a great story to tell in the future.  Bus started rolling 5:20am we arrived in Managua 7:13pm. It was a helluva journey for sure.

Sao Paulo Virtual Tour – Berrini Ave to the Airport

Driving through the streets of Sao Paulo during Covid19

SAO PAULO VIRTUAL TOUR – Berrini Ave to GRU Airport (4K). It was quite a long journey and the traffic didn’t make it any better. Took as more than 40 minutes to get into the airport as traffic was quite bad. The view from outside the car was beautiful though. #GirlOnGlobalAdventures #GoGA #SaoPauloVirtualTour

GOING TO THE PHILIPPINES DURING COVID

This is my COVID19 story

Going home to the Philippines during COVID 19. When the CDC increased the threat level for the Corona Virus to level 4 we had to make a decision. Do we continue to travel as planned or cancel everything and head home to our respective home country. We had a total of 4 international travels pre-booked, hotel reservations and scheduled activities. Countries are getting stricter on their international inbound travels and some of the places on our itinerary is closed down as well. We were torn but we had to make a decision fast, keeping in mind that if we choose to stay we will be traveling around with a huge risk of getting the virus and without travel insurance. As CDC issued the advisory it impacted the international medical insurance policies that we had. As it is level 4 worldwide, our travel medical insurance will not cover any cost related to COVID19.

March 15 we decided to call our travel insurance and arranged for an emergency evacuation flight to our respective home country, USA and the Philippines. SafetyWing, our travel insurance was very exceptional on their response and efficiency. Few hours after the call they provided us with the soonest flight options. And on March 17 I bid goodbye to Linsey in Siem Reap, Cambodia while her flight to the US was the day after. That marked the end of our Southeast Asia adventure, and we faced an uncertain future. Here’s a video on my journey home to Lowac, Argao during #COVID19. I didn’t finished my daily vlog as I did the same thing over and over again whilst doing the 14 day quarantine. 🤣😅😂 #GirlsOnGlobalAdventures #GoGA #Brazil #COVID19

SAO PAULO STREET ART – BRAZIL ADVENTURES DURING #COVID19

Walking around Sao Paulo’s famous street art, check out this video here! Or visit my YouTube channel for more travel vlogs!!! http://www.youtube.com/GirlsOnGlobalAdventures

Today we explore Beco Do Batman in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is a famous tourist destination because of the artistic mural and graffiti along the street. The nickname for the area is attributed to a graffiti of the DC Comics character Batman which was painted on one of the walls in the 1980s. The graffiti of Beco do Batman is now continually renovated and cared for by local community members. We only had few days to discover Sao Paulo and Beco Do Batman is one of the few places we decided to explore. Come see what we see, as we walk through the street of Beco do Batman in Sao Paulo Brazil during COVID 19.

Yogyakarta-Gateway to Borobudur and Prambanan Temple; things you need to Know

Check out my YouTube channel for travel videos – Girls On Global Adventures , I post new videos weekly. I am currently traveling through Southeast Asia.

In our recent trip to Java, we had a litte stop in the city called Yogyakarta. It is (often called “Jogja”) the capital city of Indonesia Special Region of Yogyakarta. As the only Indonesian royal city still ruled by a monarchy,  it is located in the island of Java known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. Its ornate 18th-century royal complex, or kraton, encompasses the still-inhabited Sultan’s Palace. Also within the kraton are numerous open-air pavilions that host classical Javanese dance shows and concerts of gamelan music, characterized by gongs, chimes and plucked string instruments. it is located in the Central Java and could be reached via several modes of tranportation.

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Train – there are a lot of routes available depending on where you are traveling from. There are two main train station that connects Jogja to different part of Java. As we were previously in Jakarta prior to going to Yogyakarta, it took us 8 hours on a train. We had the executive type of train so it was comfortable.
  • Plane – Yogyakarta has two international airport that you can fly in directly. Various places around Indonesia has flights available to Jogja as well.
  • Private Vehicle – This is possibe if you are traveling from another part of Java, the roads around Java are decent and you can definitely drive on your own with the help of online Map apps >> Google Map – Yogyakarta. Make sure to download offline maps.

We started our trip in Jakarta, had a ticket living from Gambir Train Station at 8am. The 8-hour train ride went on smoothly, had several scheduled stop to several stations. That’s pretty much it. The train has mini restaurant where you can buy food, and there are attendants that visits ever so often bringing food for sale. Upon arriving in the Jogja station, we waited for our bike rental which we reserved in advance and drove 20 minutes to our homestay. (tip: better to book for transport in advance to avoid drivers crowding you for service)

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Train ticket – You can book your train ticket in advance direactly the train company directly Kereta Api Indonesia , It is convenient and you can skip the long queue at the train station. You can just go directly to the check-in kiosk. You can also check out TRIP.COM they offer online booking on various services, Hotel ticket, train, flight. (Alternative)
  • Bike rental – Normally you can get this service through your accommodation. we got ours at IDR 70,000 ($5).
  • AccommodationTiga Lima Homestay , they were very accommodating. Breakfast was included in the package and they’d let you choose the time you want to have them from 6-9am, and they’ll deliver it at your door. The place was nice as well and had a pool and rooms are spacious.
  • RestaurantYam Yam Thai Restaurant, the food was great, they had different varieties of curries and all are equally delicious. You would want to reserve in advance as it could get really crowded.
  • RestaurantCanting Restaurant – Yogya , It is located inside a mall so it is quite easy to locate. It is on the top floor with an overlooking view of Jogja.
  • DessertsTempo Gelato , there were quite a few gelato places in jogja, and at night they are all packed. This ice cream bar is spacious, with a garden sitting, and the interiors is nicely decorated.
  • RecreationBliss Pool & Lounge , they are open until 4am, they got plenty of pool tables, the place is clean, and the crew are very friendly.
  • It is always better to drive on your own, as long as you are set to drive on a very busy roads. The city is big enough for a spontaneous city tour with a lot of interesting things to offer.

If you are not subscribe to my website yet, please take some time to follow for more travel tips and stories. And have you read “Nusa Penida, Indonesia – Travel Guide To A Perfect Gateaway” . If you are considering going there, you should read that.

Borobudur Temple – it is one of Indonesia’s top tourist attraction. Declaired as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as largest Buddhist temple in the world recognized by Guinness World Records . This temple has gone through multiple restorations and hardships; from volcanic eruptions of nearby volcanoes, stolen head of buddha, bombing, and overcrownding causing wear on the stone stairs. It remains popular for pilgrimage, with Buddhists in Indonesia celebrating Vesak Day;Buddha’s Birthday. The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Buddhahood), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha in the Theravada or southern tradition. Click >> Borobudur Temple – Wikipedia for more details about the temple.

An image of Vairocana Buddha in Borobudur Temple
Multiple perforated stupa in Borobudur temple

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • An hour bike ride from Yogyokarta proper
  • Best to travel before the break of dawn to skip traffic
  • Best to visit during sunrise, but be prepared for influx of tourist doing the same thing as you. The earlier you are, the best spot you can get for sunrise
  • Compared to alot of temples in Indonesia, the entrance fee to the temple is more expensive, IDR 450,000 ($33) but it included breakfast buffet.

Prambanan Temple –  is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Special Region of YogyakartaIndonesia, dedicated to the Trimūrti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Transformer (Shiva). The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) northeast of the city of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces. The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu architecture, and by the towering 47-metre-high (154 ft) central building inside a large complex of individual temples. Prambanan attracts many visitors from around the world. Click >> Prambanan Temple – Wikipedia for more details.

Quite gorgeous after sunset when people started leaving the compound. The puddle in the middle of the ground made it perfect
Dumbfounded by how beautiful Prabanan Temple was after sunset.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

  • Best view on sunset, but very touristy
  • Just a 35 minutes bike ride from Yogyokarta proper, be longer if in a car because of traffic
  • Drivers are all over the roads, and it would be very stressful to drive around if you are not an experience driver.
  • Once you leave the city proper roads are getting better and there’s an allocated lane for bikes
  • If you want to have a photo with less people in it, visit early in the morning as people tend to go to Borobudur Temple for sunrise.
  • This destination is very expensive compared to other temples, entrance fee IDR 370,000 ($25)

APPROXIMATE TRAVEL BUDGET:

  • IDR 500k per night in Tiga Lima Homestay breakfast included
  • IDR 70K per day bike rental
  • IDR 450K per pax entrance fee to Borobudur Temple buffet breakfast included
  • IDR 350K per pax entrace fee to Prambanan Temple (there are other temples situated in the premesis of the compund)
  • IDR 50K for petrol
  • Meal prices is not included as it varies depending on where you go eat

I somehow have a mixed opinion regarding both temples, as both are world acclaimed site, it was way too expensive to visit both. They have fully commercialized both temple that even when you are not dress appopriately to go inside a temple, they tend to overlook them. The people guarding the premesis often overlook tourist that are disrespecting the the temple, like standing, and sitting on the parts of the temple. At the end of the trip, I fully appreciate the ancient people who have built these massive temple it must have taken them years to contruct th huge temples. I am in awe of the intricate designs carved on the walls, it tells stories of what happened hundreds of years ago. Yogyakarta, what an amazing place you are.
